Are you considering getting into broiler farming and wondering how much it could cost you? We have developed a quote to help you estimate the total cost of your project.

The total cost of raising 50 broilers, with the necessary equipment and feed, is 100,000 FCFA ($192.30). This quote is based on a farm that already has the necessary equipment such as feeders and waterers.

Purchase of poultry

To get started, you’ll need a box of chicks, which costs between 25,000 FCFA and 30,000 FCFA ($48.08 to $57.69). For our estimate, we took an average price of 28,000 FCFA ($53.85) for a box.

Purchasing food

Regarding feeding, chicks consume 1 kg of starter feed per week, or a 50 kg bag for the duration of this phase. For the growth phase, each chicken consumes 1.5 kg of feed per week, which is equivalent to 1.5 bags of 50 kg. Finally, for the finishing phase, each chicken again consumes 1.5 kg of feed per week, or again 1.5 bags of 50 kg. The total feed cost for 50 chickens is 58,000 FCFA ($111.54) if you purchase the entire quantity at once, with an average price of 14,500 FCFA ($28.08) per bag of 50 kg.

Medical expenses, shavings, heating and unforeseen expenses

In addition to food, you will also have to take into account medical expenses (5,000 FCFA, $9.62), the purchase of wood shavings (1,000 FCFA, $1.92), firewood (2,000 FCFA, $3.85) and unforeseen events (6,000 FCFA, $11.54).

Loss forecasts

Finally, it is important to note that there can be 3% to 10% mortality in chickens, especially for beginners. For this estimate, we considered a mortality rate of 10%. Therefore, the number of reformed subjects is estimated at 45.

Earnings prediction

Generally, chickens are ready for sale at 2-2.5 kg in 35 days, if all conditions are met. For our estimate, we took an average selling price of 3,000 FCFA ($5.77) for each 2 kg chicken. The total sale of chickens is therefore 135,000 FCFA ($260.58), to which must be added the sale of droppings (100 × 15 FCFA = 1,500 FCFA, $2.88). The total profit therefore amounts to 36,500 FCFA ($70.19), once expenses are deducted.

It is important to note that prices may vary depending on your area and country. It is therefore recommended to research local costs before embarking on this project.

Conclusion

Ultimately, broiler farming can be profitable if you take into consideration the different stages of breeding and are willing to invest accordingly. With a budget of 100,000 CFA francs ($192.30), it is possible to buy a box of chicks and everything needed to raise them, including food, medical care, firewood and shavings. 45 birds are expected to survive until cull age, where they can be sold for between 2,750 and 3,500 CFA francs ($5.29 to $6.73) per chicken, which can bring in a minimum profit of 36,500 CFA francs ($70.19) in just 45 days.

However, it is important to note that chick and feed prices may vary depending on your region and country. To maximize your profits, you may consider making your own chicken feed using a suitable feed formula for optimal growth. Ultimately, with effective planning and execution, broiler farming can be a profitable business for breeders.
