2024 ranking of African countries with the most powerful armies: Revelations from the Global Firepower annual report
Global Firepower’s annual report on the military power of African countries is now available for the year 2024. This study ranked 38 African countries based on their military power index (PwrIndx), calculated from more than 60 different factors .
African countries have seen their military power grow in recent years. Countries on the continent are increasingly investing in their armed forces to face security challenges such as terrorism, regional conflicts, maritime piracy and natural disasters. However, not all countries have the same military capabilities. This is why this annual ranking is important to know which countries are the most powerful in terms of defense.
Not surprisingly, Egypt occupies first place in the ranking. Egypt has the largest army in Africa in terms of manpower and modern military equipment. It is followed by Algeria, which also has a powerful and modern army, with an emerging defense industry and local production capacity.
The third most powerful African country in terms of defense is South Africa, which has a well-developed defense industry and advanced technological capabilities. The country is also a key player in peacekeeping operations in Africa.
Morocco, on the other hand, ranks fourth thanks to its well-trained and equipped armed forces, as well as its military cooperation with foreign countries. Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, is in fifth place with a rapidly growing military and developing defense industry.
The rest of the rankings include countries such as Tunisia, Libya, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, Cameroon and Ghana, all of which have armed forces considered important to their national and regional security.
In conclusion, the Global Firepower report shows that Africa has growing military capacity. The ranking also shows that the most powerful countries in terms of defense are those which invest in their armed forces and in their defense industry. These countries can thus face current and future security challenges, and play a leading role in peacekeeping operations in Africa.
